Our project "HS-Econergy" stands for energy- and resource-saving filter solutions06.2021

Our project "HS-Econergy" stands for energy-saving and resource-saving filter solutions.

We at HS-Luftfilterbau GmbH have been pursuing the approach of sustainable production since the end of the 1990s. Last but not least, we underline our attitude to this with our environmental management, which has been certified for more than twenty years. While we have optimized our processes more and more in the past with regard to environmental compatibility, we consider the time to be more than ripe enough to also take certain risks in product development.  We will offer the market and consumers products that not only increase the energy efficiency of your ventilation system, but also give you the choice to reduce the consumption of irreplaceable raw material resources and the associated CO2 release in the production of air filters.

Storage filters (in this sense "air filters" for short) are essential consumable components to ensure the functionality of air handling systems. They consist of a variety of more or less high-quality and elaborately manufactured materials. In addition to the filter media, which consist of synthetic nonwovens or meltblowns, glass fibers or synthetic membranes, other important components are frames, seals and special adhesives. Optimization of the sustainability of these products has so far largely failed to materialize due to the price sensitivity of large-scale users and consumers. Manufacturers' efforts are mainly focused on energy savings during operation and the lowest possible manufacturing costs. In both cases, it may be assumed that these aspects of sustainability are already very advanced.

However, if you look at the resource requirements of a compact filter, which is used, for example, in HVAC systems, supply and exhaust air systems or gas turbines, an imbalance immediately becomes painfully apparent when you look at the figures. Filters of this type weigh 6 - 8 kg in standard dimensions. During the period of use, these filters store approximately 250 - 600 g of atmospheric dust, particles and aerosols.  In other words, a 7.5 kg filter (592x592x292 mm) will be disposed of after its weight increases to 7.9 kg when the final pressure differential is reached, or in other words: for a maximum of half a kilo of stored fine dust, 7.5 kg of mass must also be disposed of. Recycling of the components is not possible or would be extremely difficult simply because of the filtrates.

Thus, the balance of utility effectiveness for these products is conceivably poor.

Due to their widespread use and therefore large quantities, as well as their comparatively poor cost-effectiveness, the optimization of compact filters is our first development goal, which will be followed by a series of sustainability optimizations across our entire production range in the coming years. Here, it depends on users and consumers, i.e. ultimately you, whether we can consistently follow this path. The costs of sustainable products will initially be higher than those of conventional products. In the long term, however, these changes are unavoidable if we want to leave a planet worth living on to future generations.  Under the given circumstances, there is not much time left to carry out the transformation of our consumer goods and consumer products.

Our project "Econergy" starts this summer with our compact filter HS-Mikro Pak 4V Econergy whose plastic components consist of more than 60% renewable raw materials. If we succeeded in replacing our total demand of plastics in this segment, we could save about 70 - 90 tons of polystyrene per year and thus reduce the consumption of fossil raw materials in this supply chain by more than 70%.

Sad fact on the side: the production of 1 kg of polystyrene requires about 10 kg of crude oil, 7.4 kg of natural gas and 0.14 kg of coal to extract it.

We would be pleased if you would support us in this mission. Your purchase decision allows us to consistently continue on this path.

HS-Nano: the next HEPA / ULPA generation05.2016

We are professionals in producing HEPA and ULPA filters for more than 40 years now. Our experience with ePTFE membrane technology reaches back more than a decade.

Our latest developments in HEPA / ULPA membrane technology will take the outstanding performance from niche implementations in the microelectronic industy to wide fields of common customer applications.

So far the difficulties to quality such filters in-situ with oil based aerosols is one of the main reasons why these innovative and energy saving filtertypes have not yet reached the popularity they could have.

The qualifying test on site is often a compelling requirement to maintain stable clean air processes, a requirement for approval and obligatory for certified processes. The tests are generally carried out in a way that oil-based aerosols are applied to the filter while photometer or discrete particle counters measure the efficiency of the installed filters. Depending on the measuring method there are remarkable aerosol concentrations generated and disposed in the filter to be qualified. Conventional PTFE media filters are usually sensitive to oils, which normally leads to an irreversible increase of  the pressure drop with the usual test methods. This may negate the significant advantage of PTFE filters during the qualification.

We as manufacturer are using monodisperse PSL solid aerosol to perform final filter tests according to EN1822 for this kind of filters to avoid affecting the PTFE's performance. But many cleanroom areas are underlying international regulations ( GMP, FDA etc.) which prescribe and demand oil based aerosols for in-situ testing without allowing alternative test methods.  Thus, the use of the advantageous PTFE media based HEPA and ULPA filters can be problematic due to the pressure increase on the qualification run.

HS-Luftfilterbau GmbH developed a revolutionary new filter series based on ePTFE filter media which is resistant against common oil based test aerosols(DEHS, PAO, DOP, etc.)  applied for in-situ testing called HS-Nano SF-AL.

HS-Nano SF-AL type filters performance will not be affected by typical "field-testing" with oily aerosols. This allows customers from medical, food or other lifescience areas to profit from the outstanding performance of membrane based HEPA and ULPA filters.

Our HEPA / ULPA filter of type HS-Nano SF-AL are available from August 2016 and offer outstanding features up to filter class EN1822 U16 / ISO 29463 ISO65U such as:

  • up to 60% savings in pressure drop (i.e. H14 at 0,45 m/s => Glass 110 Pa | PTFE 38 Pa)
  • less noise emissions due to lower fan speeds
  • massively saved energy costs
  • with new developments and constructions we may save space by reducing up to 70% of the filter depth
  • most robust design (ultra rigid filter media prevents defects by mishandling and clumsy installation)
  • no reduction of the burst pressure at high air humidity (glass media filters may lose up to 90% burst strength when fully soaked).
  • ideal at safety relevant processes thanks to its >400% higher burst strength compared to glass.

Ultimate Safety: HS-Strongshield07.2015

NEW: HS-Strongshield Filters offer the maximum security at processes with high hazard risk potentials. The groundbreaking HS-Strongshield filter technology provides a superior media tensile strength up to 400% higher than usual glass media. Different to usual Filters the HS-Strongshield filtermedia is armored by rigid layers of polyester. This ensures that HS-Strongshield filters offer an unmatched safety at extreme conditions such as high moisture, shock pressures, accident failures of pre-filterstages, presence of explosive atmospheres etc.. The air entry side of the filters is metalized and conductive to depleat any electrical potentials that can cause ignitions by grounding connectors on the filter. Hence HS-Strongshield filters ideally suit the safety needs of processes in ATEX areas. No additional protective grids are required due to the robust media structure. HS-Strongshield filters are dedustable by typical pulsejet or blast systems.

NEW: Polystyrene frame for HEPA filters  in 292 mm (12") depth07.2015

NEW:our product lines HS-Mikro SF & SFV (HEPA Filter) and our compact filter types HS-Makro F & FV are now available with our new plastic frame in 292 mm depth as alternative to MDF, galv. steel or stainless steel.  This frame type safes costs when used as alternative against stainless steel and also ideally suits applications where hygiene regulations do not tolerate MDF. The 292 mm polystyrene frame allows easy waste disposal by combustion since filters with this frames are by standard metal free.
